Everything in New York seems expensive for travellers; even at the bottom end of the market, accommodation can cost, per-night, $30 for a shared dorm in a hostel, or if you are a couple or want some privacy, $180 for a room in a downmarket hotel. With the basics draining the holiday budget at an alarming rate, who has the money to treat themselves?

Well, probably you – if you are willing to look beyond the main thoroughfares. Exploring the lesser-known areas of the Big Apple can provide you with a plethora of options for pampering yourself in New York City on a budget.

If it’s a manicure or beauty spa treatment you yearn for, take a stroll in the Upper East Side. The key here is to look beyond sometimes dingy facades for the things that really count: if the place is clean, the staff are friendly and professional and, best of all, if they already have customers you get yourself a top-shelf manicure for a fifth of the price – between $5 and $12 for a full manicure and varnish, and similarly budget-friendly beauty treatments.

If spa shopping doesn’t bring out the explorer in you, let your fingers do the walking. Investigate the best spa deals online with www.spafinder.com, www.LifeBooker.com, or www.spa-addicts.com, or call spas directly to ask if they’re running any specials that month. It pays to shop around.

Massage and beauty therapy schools provide a wonderfully cheap option for spa-seekers on a budget. Call local massage therapy schools to see if they have any appointments available – these schools offer super-discounted treatments so that their senior students can practice before they are fully out in the world. Sit back and relax under professionally-trained hands (with tutors close by – these schools have it in their best interests to make your appointment as wonderful as possible), knowing that your appointment is helping a young professional and not straining your wallet.

Tap in to local information for the best ideas of where to go. New York isn’t pricey just for visitors – it costs a heck of a lot to live there, and New Yorkers are particularly invested in beauty. A site that might be helpful to this aim is www.yelp.com/nyc – a Website with lots of local reviews of all sorts of things, and definitely worthy of a browse before you head for NYC.

Sitting in a salon is not the only way of pampering yourself while in New York City, and you will get the most out of your holiday when you think outside the box. Interested in health and exercise? Why not investigate some yoga, Tai Chi or meditation classes for your visit? (The best thing about the latter two is that sometimes you can find them for free.) If you’re a food nut, look carefully at the menus for upmarket restaurants and see if you can stretch your budget to a small (not meal-sized) nibble – there is nothing like amazing food, even in small doses, to make a person feel absolutely pampered.

Here are a couple more Website that may help you find those special treats when you want to be pampered in NYC on a budget:

www.goldstar.com – a great site for nights out, events, etc. You must join to purchase, but not to browse, and membership is free. The site offers ticket deals as well as member reviews of things.

www.freenyc.net – has, as it sounds, listings of free events around NYC, some of which are incredible – a recent one was a free talk by Spike Lee.

www.yogaworks.com – is a company that has some really good offers from time to time, including free classes for beginners.

Looking forward to spending a fantastic family vacation? Well, who wouldn’t? Before you consider where to go or what your family would do, let me tell you an idea that you might find appealing. I am so sure that you have had family vacations in the past. And I can only guess where you spent your vacations. Is it at a camp site, in a beach, or in amusement parks?

It is not surprising if you have been to these places because they are the most popular getaways for families. The thing is, why not try something new this time for the family’s next vacation? How would you like to go sailing or go aboard a cruise ship together?

At some point, you have probably thought about boarding a cruise ship. You want to try it. Now you don’t have to own a boat or a ship in order to go sailing. Just like you, many people want to go on a cruise. However, the problem is that they think these travel vacations can be very expensive. Well, while going on a cruise ship would cost more than your other options for your family destination, I’m telling you the extra expense is worth it.

If you are wondering whether all the members of the family will enjoy the activities in the cruise, you can assure yourself that nobody will get bored on a cruise. Cruise ships, especially those which cater to families, offer a wide selection of activities that all members of the family could choose from. In short, there are activities for children, for teenagers, and for adults.

Some of the activities include swimming, gaming, gambling, eating, watching movies and plays, dancing and singing, as well as clubbing. You don’t have to worry because there are activities designed specifically for an age group. In fact, cruise ships even offer child care. Cruise employees will gladly take care of your children, entertaining them with games while you and your partner enjoy other activities onboard. The good news about this offer is that it’s free for most cruise lines. This is beneficial especially to couples who want to spend time together without worrying about their child.

Some may think that it’s boring to go on a cruise merely because you are confined in a ship. That’s not true at all. People on a cruise rarely realize that they are not on land, but on a ship in the middle of the sea. People have so much fun aboard a cruise ship that they tend to forget where they actually are. Who would have thought that various entertainment activities could be found inside a vessel?

Cruise ship vacations are memorable especially to children and teenagers. It’s something that they would surely remember for the rest of their lives. This experience is something that they would proudly share to their friends or to people they would meet in the future. So as parents, don’t deprive them and yourselves the chance to have this memorable vacation.

Routine cleaning and sanitizing of children’s toys is a critical line of defense against the spread of infectious diseases such as colds and flu caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites. These diseases can be spread from one child to another when handling infected toys.

These infectious diseases can be spread in four different ways:

  1. Through the instestinal tract with infectious diarrhea, pinworms and Hepatitis A
  2. Through the respiratory tract by secretions or fluids from the child’s eyes, nose, mouth, and lungs as with colds, Roseola, Influenza, strep throat, scarlet fever, and chicken pox.
  3. Through direct contact by touching toys infected with Impetigo, Ringworm, Conjunctivitis, scabies, and head lice.
  4. Through blood contact with AIDS and Hepatitis B.

Communicable diseases are spread by children who do not look or feel sick. The body secretions from infectious children get onto the surfaces of toys when breathed upon, touched, coughed upon, sneezed upon, or put into the mouth.

The germs from many infectious diseases thrive on toys, hands, and faces. The following disinfecting solutions will prevent the spread of diseases from one child to another when they are playing with the same toys. It is important to clean and disinfect all toys shared by children on a daily basis.
It is not necessary to spend a lot of money on commercial disinfectants.

The best disinfectant against all types of communicable diseases is found right in the laundry room. This disinfectant is ordinary household bleach that can be purchased for a fraction of the cost of other commercially advertised household cleaners.

There are two different mixtures for disinfecting toys and other areas of the home. One of the bleach mixtures is for standard disinfection of toys, while the other is for a stronger disinfecting solution.

Standard Bleach Mixture:

The Standard Bleach Mixture of one tablespoon of bleach mixed with one quart of water is used for routine sanitation of toys using a spray bottle. This mixture is also perfect for sanitizing changing tables after each use, diaper pails, potty chairs, play tables, eating utensils, and sippy cups.

Strong Bleach Mixture:

The Strong Bleach Mixture of one part bleach mixed with ten parts water is used for disinfecting toys and other household items that have come into contact with blood, vomit, bowel matter, and bodily fluids.

Each of these bleach mixtures must be mixed fresh every day because bleach loses its effectiveness when exposed to the air.

Washing and Disinfecting Toys:

Wash all toys that have been in children’s mouths at least once a day with soap and water, then spray with the Standard Bleach Mixture. Let the bleach mixture dry on the toys.

Small toys that fit in a dishwasher may also be disinfected when put through the wash and dry cycles.

Larger toys can be washed in a tub full of the Standard Bleach Mixture then left to air dry. This will kill all of the germs from the entire surface of the toys.

Outdoor play areas can be disinfected using a garden hose with a bottle connection that mixes the bleach with the water. These bottles are found in the garden section of department stores. A scrub brush and bucket of the Standard Bleach Mixture can also be used.

Daily disinfecting of toys helps keep children healthy without the spread of infectious diseases. Disinfecting toys is the best safeguard from the spread of illnesses in children.

Teens may view homework simply as a teachers’ tool to make their lives difficult but home work does play a vital role in one’s education and attitude-formation. Relaying the higher purpose of homework to students would most likely result in motivating them to love the work and spend time to complete their home work on a regular basis. It is also the teachers’ responsibility to ensure that the types of assignments they give are strategic in a way that fulfills attitude and skill building for their students.

Homework builds the value of self-discipline in a person. Away from the constricting school environment where one is mandated by a teacher to complete tasks, taking time to finish homework is a sign of a strong self-discipline as it denotes sacrificing another activity in exchange for time spent on boring school work.

Time-management is another skill mastered by those who make it a point to finish to finish their homework and can still maintain a good balance of their life with extra-curricular activities or personal hobbies. Time-management is a vital skill in adult life and starting the habit early on is a big plus.

Spending time on homework and focusing on the task ahead is very difficult considering all the distractions of high school life. Being able to flush out all the noise to do school work has a big impact in the formation of students’ skill to concentrate and focus on the task ahead. A vital practice for all employees!

Most homework are designed to give a more in-depth knowledge of a lesson to students in a way that the teachers will not be able to incorporate. Aside from learning more about a certain topic, the students will also get to practice the value of resourcefulness in searching for answers be it in the library, the internet or a network. This would also practice students to be more independent in searching for knowledge instead of having to be “spoon-fed” by the school. The drive to look more into a topic is a practice to be pro-active which a major factor in the corporate world.

Another important skill developed from homework is being organized. One will need to juggle various subjects, research materials and field work aside from tracking down the different homework deadlines. To survive, students have no other option but to practice their organizational skills. That is another strong value that would win points in applying for a future job.

Home work has a great impact in a person. The habits and skills practiced and developed by constantly doing homework builds up a good attitude that is useful in “the real world.” The effects of homework is not instantly felt by students and as homework is immediately and willingly forgotten as soon as one steps out of the university, it most probably will never occur to students to credit good habits and skills to home work. What they do not know is that home work is a tool of the education system that helps them develop and master valuable skills early on.

A new report by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention shows that Americans continue to have a problem with obesity and are generally less healthy than citizens of many other nations. However, there are a few bright spots in the Center’s report, indicating that all American cities are not equally unhealthy.

You might suspect that California cities are among the healthiest in America. An emphasis on healthy eating and an almost obsessive addiction to exercise on the West Coast would suggest that perhaps they are healthier than the rest of the nation. But in fact, the CDC ranks the tiny metropolis of Burlington, Vermont as the healthiest city in America.

With a population of just over 40, 000, Burlington has been consistently voted one of the greenest and “most livable” cities in the United States. The college town has a median age of 37, and a reputation for plentiful outdoor activities. In fact, many residents routinely walk or bicycle around town and to work; while in the winter, skiing, snowboarding and hiking are all extremely popular.

Burlington (and Vermont in general) also has a reputation for progressive politics, and even smaller employers tend to offer very attractive health benefits. This emphasis on providing all residents with adequate health care most certainly contributes to the “healthiness” of the city, and one of the lowest levels of obesity in the country.

Interestingly, Burlington also has a relatively high percentage of both vegetarians and vegans, and census data indicates that about 40% of its citizens have at least a four year college degree, making Burlington one of the most highly educated areas of the country. Statistics also show that only 8% of the city’s residents live in poverty, far lower than the national average.

But on the opposite end of the “healthiness” scale, the CDC report says that Huntington, West Virginia has the “honor” of being the least healthy city in the US. Unlike Burlington, less than 15% of Huntington residents are college graduates. Nearly 50% of the city’s residents are considered obese, and the city has a higher than average percentage of fast food restaurants, suggesting that they eat less healthy meals.

Rates for diabetes and heart disease are also higher than average in Huntington, and there is less emphasis on outdoor activity, walking and using public transportation. Also contributing to the health problem is the poor state of the economy in West Virginia — approximately 20% of Huntington residents live below the poverty level, and many residents have no health insurance.

The CDC report shows that America clearly has a long way to go to become the healthy, active society it can be; but there are shining examples good health within the nation, like Burlington Vermont.

When you format your hard disk, do you think you’re completely erasing all data from it? This question is not important if you are just going to reinstall your operating system and get on with it. What if you’re going to sell your computer or give it away? You would want to make sure all data, especially private and confidential, (credit card details/passwords) is erased.

You may not have heard of the story of two MIT students who purchased 158 used hard disk drives from different sources and were able to retrieve 5,000 credit card numbers, among other private and confidential information that were supposed to have been erased.

So, when you delete a file from a computer, it is not really removed from your system. It is only made invisible. There are programs that can help you recover the deleted files. The same goes if you format your hard disk. If you have accidentally formatted your hard disk without backing up important data, this is good news to you because of the data recovery option. But if you have information you don’t wish to be available to others, you would want an option for permanent erasure.

A more reliable option is to resort to disk wiping to ensure your data is permanently removed from the hard disk. Also called data dumping, it involves writing over your hard disk with ‘useless’ data several times to remove whatever sensitive data that may remain in there. You overwrite existing data with ones, zeros or assorted characters with the help of a disk wiping software. The software will replace the master boot record, partition table and each and every hard drive sector with the ‘useless’ data.

One such software is Secure Harddisk Eraser, a freeware that can do a good job of permanently removing data from your hard disk. It overwrites every sector of the hard disk at least thrice. There’s also an option to allow you to go up to 35 times.

The way you do it is by downloading an image file. Then by using a program like WinImage you could create a program that could be copied to your floppy disk. The developer’s website allows you to download either the 3-pass or the 35-pass version.

  • Insert the disk into the floppy drive and boot your computer.
  • By default your computer will boot from the C drive. You would have to go to BIOS and set the boot drive to floppy.
  • Wait for a minute after booting for the program to start erasing your hard disk. The 3-pass mode would require about twenty minutes per GB while the 35-pass option will take three hours.
  • When you start hearing a beep every second, you know erasure is complete.
  • The final step is trying to boot from your hard disk. Remove the floppy disk and boot the computer.
  • If it’s not possible to boot from the hard disk, then it is completely erased.

In order to receive the new digital television signal that stations will be broadcasting in a couple of weeks, some people will need a converter box. But there is a problem; it seems there is a shortage of the converter boxes that people need to receive an over-the-air digital television signal. According to the Federal Communication Commission, the Consumer Electronics Association has three to six million converter boxes available for sale, but at the rate the boxes are being sold, they could deplete the supply within a month.

Most of these converters will be bought with government issued coupons; however, Congress didn’t allow enough money for the coupons, so the waiting list has been building since December. New coupons are only mailed out when the old ones expire unused. So there are now requests for 3.7 million coupons on hold.

So what happens when the deadline for the digital switch comes and everyone doesn’t have a converter box? Well, Congress will approve the new money for the converter box program as part of the stimulus bill, and by the time that is approved, there should be a new stock of converters on store shelves.

At the request of the Obama administration, the Democratic Party has tried to move the switch back to June 12. The bill failed to pass however, because nearly all of the Republicans representatives voted against it. Recently, the Senate voted unanimously for a nearly identical bill to delay the switch. It will be taken up by the House Energy and Commerce Committee this week and is scheduled for a full vote shortly thereafter. This version of the bill is expected to pass.

Meanwhile, if you’ve been waiting to receive your coupon for $40 in the mail to assist you with the digital switch, you may be waiting a bit longer. The new deadline for the switch will most likely be June 12, but the stimulus bill is still held up by the Senate. When the money for the new coupons is finally allocated, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, which runs the converter coupon program, will begin sending them out to people on the waiting list.

Also, if you did receive a coupon but have procrastinated about redeeming it, the bill includes a clause that will allow for the reissue of coupons that weren’t redeemed within the ninety day deadline. Unfortunately, this clause also will not take effect until the stimulus bill is finally signed into law.

It’s a fact- most laptops can’t handle Windows Vista with ease. The operating system is memory intensive and runs on the newest frameworks from Microsoft. As opposed to the older operating systems like Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional and the Home Edition, Vista is something else. The operating system chooses the laptop that would do its internal frameworks justice.

The Dell XPS 1530 is one of these rare high-end laptops that could definitely do the job of handling Windows Vista. Essentially, Dell has been known to produce rock-solid laptops geared for top-notch performance. If you plan on using a lot of multimedia software, business tools and applications, the Dell XPS 1530 is definitely for you.

What kind of performance does Windows Vista require? A lot- which slower computers and notebooks cannot give. For example, a note book with a 1 gigabyte RAM cannot even handle Microsoft Office 2007 edition with ease. Imagine typing a few words and it takes a few seconds before the notebook can catch up, struggling all the while with M.O. 2007. All that will be behind you with the Dell XPS 1530.

Specifications

The Dell XPS 1530 comes pre-installed with Windows Vista Premium Service Pack 1 (SP1)- for past Windows users, you can just update the software to run Microsoft Update and the other security packs and software updates would be transferred automatically and installed. This system, which was more predominant or more efficient in the Windows XP line, allowed Service Pack 2 users to upgrade to Service Pack 3 with ease.

Dell XPS 1530 utilizes a wide screen approach to things. If you’re a fan of the 11 inch and 12 inch notebooks of bygone years, you’re going to love the XPS 1530’s 15 inch liquid crystal display. With a resolution of 1440 pixels by 900 pixels, Dell’s wide screen also employs TrueLife technology.

For the processors, this laptop has been installed with a Intel Core 2 Duo T9300, running at an impressive 2.50 gigahertz. No wonder this laptop can handle Windows Vista- it has also been integrated with a 4.09 gigabyte random access memory (RAM) running at 667 megahertz. The RAM is DDR2 SDRAM.

Like many of well known brands, the Dell XPS 1530 runs with an nVidia Geforce video card, which has a dedicated memory of about 256 megabytes. Storage is also being handled well by the Dell XPS 1530- the solid state hard drive included has a storage capacity of about 320 gigabytes (this is a SATA hard drive). For Windows Vista, give or take about 40 gigabytes and you’re all set to use the rest for documents, games and multimedia.

A card reader has also been included for easy transfers of multimedia from other devices, such as digital video cameras, mobile phones and personal digital assistants. A biometric fingerprint reader has also been installed as a theft-deterrent function. And yes, the Dell has a slim slot-loaded DVD drive that clocks at 8x revolutions per minute.

The webcam is at a sufficient 2.0 megapixels while the 9 cell battery will surely prolong your non-home or non-office usage. The Dell XPS1530 also has a HDMI port.

Getting bitten by a tick is something that most everyone goes through at some time or another. Unless you live in an area that is tick free, you are not likely to go through a lifetime without being bitten by a tick sometime or another. Ticks bite people most often in early spring and late summer. Ticks feed on the blood of their bite host, and are known for carrying some pretty nasty diseases. Given this, it is important to know the symptoms of tick bites, as well as the conditions that they can cause.

The most common tick bite symptoms include vomiting, nausea, headache, rashes and fever. These symptoms are not the only ones by a long shot, but they are the most commonly reported. The symptoms of a tick bite are very important in the diagnosis of the various illnesses and diseases that can be transmitted by tick bites. Sometimes that is all that doctors have to go on.

The most commonly known condition that one might get from a tick bite is called Rocky Mountain spotted fever. This is a serious illness that can cause horrible complications. The symptoms are usually quite sudden, and can be very dangerous. Fevers, headaches, muscle aches, and nausea are some of the most common symptoms of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Also, one usually develops a very distinct rash that begins on the hands and feet, and then spreads to the rest of the body.

Another common condition that results from a tick bite is Lyme disease. Lyme disease is a bacterial disease, and is characterized by fatigue, headache, muscle aches and pains, and a stiff neck. While Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics, it is still a dangerous disease because of the difficulty that doctors have in diagnosing it. Lyme disease presents like a number of other illnesses out there.

There are a number of other potential problems with tick bites to include lockjaw, tularemia, ehrlichiosis and babesiosis to name a few. Some people actually develop allergic reactions as well. Severe allergic reactions have been known to appear in some people, and can lead to a dangerous condition called anaphylaxis. This is a very serious situation that demands immediate medical treatment. Tick bites are dangerous and should be monitored closely for a time following the bite.

One of the biggest problems with tick bites is improper removal. When you remove a tick, you have to be very careful that you remove the entire thing and not only the body. Many people try to remove ticks and accidentally leave the head embedded under the skin. This can lead to any number of problems, and the diseases mentioned above is only a few of them. Infection is common when you do not remove the tick properly.

To avoid tick bites during the summer it is vital that you check your body with a fine tooth comb after being out and about in tick areas. This would include tall grasses, forests, woodlands and anywhere one might find a number of warm blooded animals.

Middle ear infection―also referred to as otitis media―is a common ailment of children and often occurs before the age of three. While an ear infection typically causes concern for parents of toddlers, the illness usually subsides in a couple days and children will stop having infections by the time they’re five years old.

Middle ear infection develops behind the eardrum and normally follows a cold or the flu. It can take the form of three types of infection. If the infection is temporary but happens suddenly, then the infection is referred to as acute otitis media. Recurrent acute otitis media is a medical term for a middle ear infection that returns on a seemingly regular basis. A more severe case of middle ear infection is chronic otitis media with effusion or OME. This kind of infection isn’t painful but is called “glue ear” as a sticky liquid or effusion accumulates in the middle ear.

To understand a little more about how middle ear infection occurs, it’s helpful to know something about the ear itself. The ear is divided into three segments, or the outer, middle and inner ear. The middle part is divided from the outer ear by the eardrum and contains three tiny bones essential to the function of hearing called the stirrup, anvil and hammer.

When the eardrum vibrates in response to sound, it causes the tiny bones in the middle ear to vibrate. These vibrations travel across the inner ear causing fluid to move into the inner ear at the same time. As a result the nerves respond by signaling the brain and one is able to hear.

The Eustachian tubes link the middle ear to the back of the throat and adjust or balance the pressure on either side of the eardrum. The tubes also guard the middle ear from any germs that might gain entry into the throat and permit drainage from the middle ear into the throat.

Before a child suffers from a middle ear infection, he usually, as previously mentioned, suffers from the flu or shows the signs of a cold along with a slight fever, sore throat and, in some instances, a cough.

Infants who have middle ear infections are normally feverish, restless and will pull on their ear. If your child is a toddler or older, he may complain of an earache. Yellowish fluid will drain from the ear and appear on your child’s pillow if the eardrum has ruptured. If this is the case, the eardrum usually heals in time and the pain of infection is reduced as the build-up of liquid is no longer a problem.

Middle ear infections are a result of exposure to germs or viruses. Children are more susceptible to middle ear infections in homes where there is secondhand smoke or if they attend a daycare facility on a regular basis. Also, if your child suffers from middle ear infection at an earlier age, it’s more likely he’ll have several middle ear infections before he’s four or five years old.

To treat middle ear infection, a doctor will factor in the severity of the problem as well as how long the infection has lasted.

Ear drops are often helpful in reducing ear pain and pressure and can be administered by placing your child on his side with the infected ear side up to receive the medicine. Do not administer any ear drops though if fluid is leaking from the ear. Also, cold or allergy medications can be helpful in minimizing the cold symptoms that accompany ear infections although they’re of little benefit in clearing up the infection itself.

Vaccines have been proven to be advantageous for ear infections that return repeatedly. By inoculating your child against the flu, you can minimize the occurrence of middle ear infection too. Other treatments for minimizing pain include pain medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Using a heating pad on a low setting can also soothe the ear. Just make sure your child doesn’t fall asleep while using a heating pad in order to avoid burns.

If your child has the symptoms of an infection, you should wait a couple days to see if it subsides. If no improvement is noted, then the use of any of the aforementioned treatments, antibiotics or surgery may be indicated.

As much as half of the middle ear infections in children are caused by viruses; therefore, antibiotics will not help unless the infection is the result of bacterial causes. In the majority of cases, antibiotics are taken for duration of ten days and are administered in tablet, capsule or liquid form.

If a child doesn’t respond to antibiotic treatment, a procedure called a tympanocentesis may be needed. In this procedure, the doctor collects fluid behind the eardrum with a needle to determine what type of bacteria is causing the infection so he can devise a plan of treatment.

In some cases, the doctor may suggest a procedure called a myringotomy be done to drain fluid from the ear so the eardrum doesn’t rupture. In this procedure, a small incision is made in the eardrum to drain excess fluid. Healing time for the eardrum takes approximately seven days.

For chronic cases of middle ear infection, a surgery called a typanostomy may be recommended. Also called ear tube surgery, in a typanostomy, the surgeon makes a small incision in the eardrum to remove the accumulated fluid and places a tube made of plastic or metal into the incision to drain and remove the remaining fluid and bacteria. The tube falls out on its own as the eardrum heals from the surgery. The procedure has been proven to be helpful in reducing the recurrence of infection.

A new procedure using laser treatment called an OtoLAM can be conveniently performed in a physician’s office. A laser makes a small hole in the eardrum to allow for drainage. No general anesthetic is required as ear drops are used to numb the area. Because the ear is drained and ear pressure is reduced, the associated pain is also relieved. This kind of procedure reduces the need for antibiotic therapy as a treatment cure.

Middle ear infection can cause a great deal of discomfort for children under three years old but thankfully it’s an illness that can be treated in a number of ways with success.
